Medium is a safe default for most PDFs. Pick Light for PDFs where image detail matters (product catalogues, photo reports). Pick Strong when the goal is fitting the file under an email or upload limit.
Smart compression works on the embedded JPEG photos inside your PDF. If your PDF is mostly text and vector graphics, there are no photos to shrink — and your file is already efficient. We won't push a worse file back to you.
Currently the smart compressor handles JPEG images inside PDFs, which is the most common case. PNG-style image streams are detected and left untouched (they may be re-encoded in a future update).
