Open the full worksheet maker →Most sudoku you find online is built for adults — nine-by-nine grids full of numbers, the kind you'd see in a newspaper. That's a lot to ask of a five-year-old. These puzzles work the same way, but they swap the numbers for small friendly pictures, so a child who can't yet read numbers can still solve a real sudoku. The rule never changes: every row, every column, and every marked box has to hold each picture exactly once.
Because the puzzles are picture-based, kids solve them by cutting out the little pictures and placing them in the empty squares. It turns a quiet logic puzzle into something hands-on, which tends to hold a young child's attention far longer than a worksheet they only look at.
Starting too hard is the quickest way to put a child off, so the three sizes are meant to be climbed like steps. The 2×2 is really just a first taste — there are no inner boxes, so it's all about "each picture once per row and column." The 4×4 sudoku is the classic that most people picture when they hear the word, and it's where the real thinking begins. The 6×6 sudoku is there for the child who's cracked the 4×4 too easily and is asking for something tougher.
